OUR STORY

Serving Mind, Body and Soul

The Inn at Saint Mary’s Hotel & Suites is located on the Saint Mary’s College campus which was founded by the Sisters of the Holy Cross.

The Inn opened in 1992 and was one of the first hotels on the north side of South Bend, Indiana.  The Sisters as well as the College faculty assisted Holladay Properties in the architecture, design, and name of the hotel.

Our story begins in the 19th Century in LeMans, France.

In 1843 Father Moreau of LeMans, sent four sisters to northern Indiana to assist the Holy Cross priests and brothers with establishing a school for boys and young men, an institution that would later become the University of Notre Dame.  Once complete, the Sisters turned their attention toward creating educational opportunities for women.  Ever resourceful, they were able to secure title to land near Notre Dame and built Saint Mary’s College in 1855.

During the American Civil War in 1862, several Sisters were asked to serve as nurses aboard the USS Red Rover, the U.S. Navy’s first hospital ship.  They traveled the Mississippi River carrying sick and wounded soldiers from both the North and South to their various military hospitals.  In so doing they became what U.S. naval history today hails as the pioneers or forerunners of the U.S. Navy Nurse Corps.

In the decades that followed, Sisters of the Holy Cross continued to respond to the needs of people across the developing frontier.  Holy Cross Sisters would ultimately establish more than 100 academies, schools and colleges across the United States and a nationwide healthcare system.  The Sisters, following their tradition of discerning and responding to needs of people everywhere, are currently serving in eight countries on four continents, including their service in South Bend at Saint Mary’s College.

The owners and staff of the hotel respect and honor the traditions and values of the Sisters.  We pride ourselves on discerning and responding to the needs of our guests as they navigate the fast-paced world of the 21st Century.  We seek to create an unforgettable experience for each of our visitors, and focus on serving our guests in mind, body and soul.  This holistic approach includes providing a welcoming physical environment; plentiful, healthy and distinctive meal options; and promoting physical well-being by creating perfect spaces for guests to exercise and unwind.  We honor our earth and community by incorporating unique sustainability initiatives throughout the hotel.  Above all, every staff member is committed to offering the highest level of service possible to each and every guest of the Inn.

The Inn at Saint Mary’s excels in its mission to welcome and serve guests in mind, body and soul, as inspired by the traditions of the Sisters of the Holy Cross that began on these grounds nearly two centuries ago.
